The cost of a glacier

I first walked up to Bäregg above Grindelwald in 2011, mostly for the view down into the gorge the glacier had carved. I went back this summer with the same phone-camera framing, more or less, and the difference is not subtle. Where the Lower Grindelwald Glacier’s snout used to sit, there is now several hundred metres of bare rock, scree, and a milky meltwater stream finding a new path through it. A signboard at the viewpoint marks the ice’s position in past decades for comparison, and it is a sobering thing to stand next to.

What the numbers actually say

Switzerland’s glaciers lost close to 10% of their remaining volume in 2022 and 2023 combined, the two worst melt years on record, after a winter with unusually little snow left them exposed early and a hot summer did the rest. That is not a slow century-scale trend anymore; it is happening across single seasons that visitors experience directly, and the Bernese Oberland is not exempt.

The Lower Grindelwald Glacier is the clearest local example. Its tongue has retreated more than a kilometre from the maximum extent marked by moraine ridges near the valley floor, and the retreat has accelerated since the 1980s. Walking the Eiger Trail from Alpiglen towards Eigergletscher, you cross ground that was under ice within a few generations, now dry rock with only lichen starting to establish.

The Aletsch Glacier, the largest ice mass in the Alps at roughly 20 kilometres long, is retreating more slowly in relative terms simply because there is so much more of it, but its tongue has thinned and shortened measurably, and the Aletsch Arena’s own monitoring posts document the pullback year on year, visible from viewpoints reached via Jungfraujoch or the Aletsch side.

Numbers on a page do not land the same way as photographs. I keep a folder of my own comparison shots now: the same rock outcrop above Bäregg in 2011 and 2026, the same angle down the Ice Palace corridor cut into the Aletsch Glacier below the Jungfraujoch’s Sphinx terrace, noticeably thinner walls than a decade ago. Historical postcards sold in Grindelwald souvenir shops, ironically, are some of the best comparison material going: many show the Lower Grindelwald Glacier reaching almost to the valley floor within the last hundred years.

What it changes about where you can walk

The most practical consequence for a visitor is not scenic, it is logistical. Ground that has been under ice for decades is unstable once exposed: loose rock, no established drainage, slopes that have never had time to settle. A few trail sections near active glacier tongues get closed or rerouted after rockfall, sometimes for a season, sometimes permanently redirected to higher, more stable ground. Bridges over glacial meltwater streams occasionally get relocated because the channel itself has moved as the ice retreats and the stream finds a new low point.

None of this should put you off the best day hikes from Interlaken, but it is worth checking trail status boards at the departure cable car or railway station rather than relying only on an older map or app. The Faulhorn and Bussalp loop and the walk to Bachalpsee both give long views across the Grindelwald glaciers and the peaks behind them, and both are well maintained precisely because they are popular enough to justify the upkeep. Less-trodden routes near ice margins are where you are more likely to meet a diversion sign.

The best places to see it for yourself

If you want to see the retreat rather than take my word for it, a handful of spots do it without any special hiking effort. Bäregg, reached by a well-graded path or partly by chairlift from Grindelwald, has the clearest marked comparison of any point I have found in the region.

The Jungfraujoch’s Sphinx terrace and Ice Palace show the Aletsch Glacier’s surface up close, and staff there will sometimes point out where the ice level sat when the tunnels were first cut versus now. The Aletsch Glacier day trip from the Aletsch Arena side, via Fiescheralp or Bettmeralp, gives the classic long view over the full 20-kilometre ice stream from above, which is the best way to grasp the glacier’s scale even as its edges thin.

Further afield, the Grimsel and Susten passes sit near the Rhone Glacier and Trift Glacier, both retreating fast enough that operators have had to extend footbridges and reroute cable car access more than once in the last twenty years. It is a longer excursion from Interlaken than the Grindelwald or Aletsch options, but if glacier change is genuinely the point of your trip rather than a side note, it is worth the extra distance.

Why I keep going back to look

Part of it is professional habit: I write about this valley and I want the facts current, not recycled from a decade-old guidebook. But part of it is more personal. The Oberland’s glaciers shaped the valleys I walk through every week, carved the Aare Gorge, left the moraine ridges that farms and villages are built on.

Watching them shrink in real time, on a scale of single years rather than geological ones, changes how I look at the mountains here. It is not a reason to avoid the region. If anything, seeing the ice while there is still a meaningful amount of it left feels more worthwhile now than it did when I first came, when I assumed, wrongly, that it would look much the same whenever I got round to going back.
