Things to do in Murren

Murren sits at 1,638m on a shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley and has no road access: you arrive by cable car from Stechelberg or by the Lauterbrunnen-Grutschalp funicular and connecting train, both journeys under 30 minutes. With no cars, the village is quiet even in August, and hotel rooms here tend to sleep better than anything in Interlaken, 40 minutes away by train and cable car combined.

The Allmendhubel funicular (a 4-minute ride) lifts you to a flower trail and a terrace looking straight across at the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Adventurous walkers can pick up the via ferrata to Gimmelwald, a fixed-rope route requiring a harness, which most operators rent locally for around CHF 30. Lift passes to the higher stations are not cheap, so plan the day before buying separate tickets.
