Things to do at the Rhine Falls
The Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen are the largest waterfall in Europe by volume: 150 metres wide, a 23-metre drop, and around 600 cubic metres of water a second at spring snowmelt in May and June. Both banks have viewing platforms, and boats run from the Schlossli Worth landing out to the rock in the middle of the falls, weather and water level permitting.
Schloss Laufen sits directly above the water on the south side, with a terrace close enough to feel the spray. From Interlaken, allow around 2 hours by train, usually changing in Bern or Zurich.
Schaffhausen's old town, a 15-minute walk or short bus ride from the falls, has the Munot fortress, a 16th-century circular stronghold you can walk up to for a view over the rooftops and the Rhine.
