Things to do in Wilderswil and Schynige Platte
Wilderswil, ten minutes by train or bus from Interlaken, is the base of a rack railway built in 1893 that climbs 1,400 metres in 52 minutes to Schynige Platte at 1,967 m.
It is slower and steeper than anything on the Jungfrau side, which is precisely why people who have already paid for the Jungfraujoch tend to rate this view higher: the train pulls back far enough to show the whole Eiger-Monch-Jungfrau wall above Lake Thun and Lake Brienz rather than putting you underneath it.
At the top, an alpine garden with around 650 species lines the short Panoramaweg loop, doable in under an hour. The line runs only from June to October, weather and maintenance permitting, so check before travelling outside midsummer.
